  1. Characteristics

    What does the “2L” in an A2L safety classification tell you about the refrigerant?

    • It is lower flammability: it burns, but slowly and only within a narrow concentration range
    • It has a lower toxicity than an A1 refrigerant
    • It is a two-component blend with low glide
    • It contains less than 2% hydrocarbon by weight

    A. In ASHRAE 34 the number is the flammability class and the letter is toxicity. Class 2L is the “lower flammability” subclass of Class 2: it propagates a flame but with a burning velocity of 10 cm/s or less.

    Refrigerant detection systems for A2L equipment are required to respond no later than what fraction of the LFL?

    Two identical R-32 wall units are installed in a 100 ft² office and a 400 ft² living room. How do their passive charge limits compare?

    • The living room allows 4× the charge
    • The living room allows about 2× the charge, because the limit scales with the square root of area
    • They are equal — area does not matter for wall units

    B. A light switch can arc. In a room that may contain a flammable concentration, avoid operating any electrical switch — use a flashlight brought from outside, or leave the lights as they are.

About the exam

What the A2L certification covers, and who asks for it

Who requires an A2L certification?

As of 2026 there is no separate federal A2L license — EPA Section 608 still governs refrigerant handling, and it covers HFC and HFO substitutes. But many manufacturers, distributors, and employers require documented A2L / Low GWP safety training or certification before selling A2L equipment or letting technicians install it. That is why the card matters even though the EPA does not issue it.

How many questions are on the A2L exam?

The ESCO Institute Low GWP Refrigerant Safety certification is a 50-question closed-book exam. Mainstream Engineering offers an open-book online version. Other training providers run shorter course finals. A 70% passing score is common; check your provider’s current requirement.

What topics should I study?

Refrigerant characteristics and ASHRAE 34 classification; flammability metrics (LFL, burning velocity, ignition energy); codes and standards (AIM Act, EPA 608, UL 60335-2-40, ASHRAE 15/15.2); A2L-rated tools; cylinder handling and transport; leak detection and mitigation; recovery and evacuation; charging with glide; installation charge limits; emergency response; and retrofit rules.
